Ancient India Religion

Ancient India religion lives on.

When you look at the history of ancient India, religion already played an important role, not only in the religious sense, but also economically, politically, culturally and socially. Some of the Hindu gods of today find their origin  more than 4500 years ago. Kali (Shakti, Durga) and Shiva , for instance, already were major gods in ancient India religion.

Today Hinduism still is the main religion of the nation, with 80 % of  the population practising it. It is the largest religion in Asia and one of the oldest of the world. Another ancient India religion is Buddhism. Like Hinduism it still plays a very important role on the world religious stage, but, funny enough, not  so much in its country of origin.

Another ancient India religion , founded by Mahavira, is Jainism. One of the main elements of Jainism is non-violence. Other old religions that still are  important are Zoroastrianism, Sikhism and Islam. What few people know is that there is also a very old presence of Christians in the south of the country. These Christians had arrived long before Europeans came.
