Bombay

Bombay is the capital of Maharashtra state.

Bombay, now mostly known as Mumbai, is the capital of the State of Maharashtra and the largest city of India. It has a population of 15 million. Languages spoken are Hindi, Marathi and English. Bombay is the financial and economic capital of India as well . It is, without a doubt, the most international city of the nation too.

As already mentioned above, Bombay became “Mumbai” officially in 1996, but many people, foreigners especially stick to the “old” name. Its new name is derived from “Mumba Devi”, the old goddess of the region. Along with the changing of the city’s name, many streets and squares also got a new Marathi name.

Bombay is known for the arch of triumph called Gateway of India, its gigantic Taj Mahal Hotel, which is the most famous hotel in the world, but also for it very large film production. In fact the “Bollywood” film industry is the largest in the world. Virtually all popular music in India comes from Bollywood films.
