British Imperialism in India
About British Imperialism in India.
You can say that the beginnings of British imperialism in India were in 1600, when Queen Elisabeth I granted a charter to a London trading company and gave the right to a monopoly on British trade with India. In 1612, the first trading post was established at Surat in Gujarat. Other trading posts followed and the British imperialism in India became a fact. One should think that it was the British government who ruled India during the British imperialism in India, but this was not true. It was the commercial trading company (East India Company) that ruled India. Only from 1857, the year of the Indian uprising, direct control of the country was assumed by the British government.
The British made gigantic profits with mining (iron and coal) and
trading (tea, coffee and cotton), but British imperialism in India ended
in 1947, the year of Independence. The British, as well as the
Portuguese, left a legacy of grandiose buildings that still can be seen
in India today.
