About Calcutta, West Bengal.

 

 

Calcutta (now officially called Kolkatta) has a population of 12 million. The main language is Bengal (Bengali). Calcutta is situated along the Hooghly river. Things to see there are: the Indian Museum, Maidan and Fort William, Shahid Minar, Eden Gardens, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, the Birla Planetarium and the Kali Temple.

Further there is: St John’s Church, Marble Palace, Raj Bhavan, the Zoo, the National Library, the Asutosh Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Birla Academy, the Birla Museum, Bellur Math, Pareshnath Jain Temple, Dakshineshwar Temple, the Botanical Gardens. You can visit these places on your own, but there are also organised tours to visit Calcutta.

Calcutta has a wide variety of hotels and other accommodations. Budget travellers can find a cheap hotel in the Indian Museum area. Near BBD Bagh there are many mid-range places. The city has many top end accommodation. Near Chowringhee/Sudder Street there are many good an reasonably priced restaurants.
