Clothing in India

Regional clothing in India.

The clothing in India is among the most colorful of the world. A lot of women still wear the traditional sari, a single piece of beautiful fabric between five and nine metres long and one metre wide, that is tucked and pleated into place without the use of buttons. Sometimes this graceful clothing of India has adornments like beads, synthetic materials, silver, gold, tassels, mirrors, etc.

Beautifully colored textiles have always played an important role in Indian society and trade, and were not only for clothing in India, but also for beautiful bedspreads, rugs, embroidered cushions, festival tents, etc. Saris are often recycled and made into fashion garments for street sale to tourists or for export.

Men’s clothing in India is mostly Western-style, but the traditional dhoti, lungi and mundu are also still sommon. A white garment that is pulled up between the legs is called a dhoti, while a lungi is more like a colored sarong, and a mundu is a white lungi, mostly worn in Kerala.
