Education in India

Some facts on education in India.

Education in India is compulsory and free for all up to the age of 14. There exist 668,000 primary schools, 110,000 secondary schools, 10,555 colleges and 221 universities. The government subsidises tuition for socially disadvantaged Scheduled Castes who wish to take university entry exams. In addition to state schools , education in India is also offered in many private schools, usually in the English language.

Two-thirds of the children in India are enrolled into school, including most children of primary school age. But a lot of these children don’t attend regularly and at least 33 million don’t get any education in India because they aren’t enrolled at all. Especially girls are under-represented in all schools.

At least 50% of the students from rural areas don’t finish their education in India. They drop out before completing school. There are about 20 million disabled children attending primary and secondary schools, but this might only be a fraction of India’s total number.
