India Art
About India art and its history.
Around 2200 BC, the first major civilisation flourished in the Indus river valley, known as the Harappan culture. This advanced civilisation advanced the India art and laid the foundations of the religions that still predominate today. The India art of that time was in the form of terracotta and bronze figurines, but also jewelry. Chandragupta Maurya founded the first great empire, the Mauryan Empire, around 321 BC, and the empire was converted to Buddhism after the battle of Kalinga at 260 BC. This had a great influence on the India art, and the arts flourished under the great Buddhist patron, Ashoka. He left many pillars and rock-carved edicts that can be seen in Delhi, Gujarat, Orissa, Sarnath and Sanchi.
The India art was then influenced by the Gupta Empire around 321 AD, the
arrival of the Islam around 700 AD, The Chola Empire around 800 AD, the
Vijanagar Empire around 1336 AD, the Mughal Empire around 1526 AD (resposible
for the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal), and around 1690, the European
powers flocked to India and left a legacy of grandiose buildings.
