India Currency
The India currency is the Rupee.
The India currency is the rupee (Rs) and is divided into 100 paise (p). There are notes of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 rupees and coins of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 paise and 1, 2, 5 rupees. The coins of 1, 2 and 5 rupees used to be notes but the Reserve Bank of India stopped printing these in 1996, but there may still be some in circulation. If you want to know today’s exchange rates of the India currency, you can ask at a bank. It is not possible to purchase India currency before you leave, but you can get it at the airport bank. Once you have cash with you, it’s safest to carry the money (and your passport) next to your skin, either in a moneybelt or in a pouch under your shirt. Never carry money in a shoulder bag or in your luggage.
Sometimes it’s not easy to use torn or very worn India currency notes,
so always check notes when you are given them and refuse the ones that
are damaged. It’s always handy to have a good supply of small
denomination notes for bus tickets, cheap meals and tipping.
