Political India facts: India is a constitutional democracy with 29 states and six union territories. The parliament is divided in the Lower House or the house of the people and the Upper House or the council of states. The Lower House has 545 members and the Upper House has 245 members. Religious India facts: India’s major religion is Hinduism and is practiced by approximately 80% of the population. The largest minority is Islam, practiced by approximately 12% of the Indians. Other religions practised by a minority are Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and some tribal religions. Religion is very important in India and seeps into every facet of Indian life.

Other India facts: the holy Ganges is of immense religious significance to Hindus and many pilgrims come there to take a holy dip. Poverty remains widespread and despite India’s many large cities, the nation is still overwhelmingly rural. About two-thirds of the Indian children are enrolled in school, but at least 33 million children aren’t enrolled at all.
