India  Geography

India's varied geography.

In the north India’s geography is determined by the highest mountains of the world, the Himalayas. The Kanchenjunga, which is the highest mountain of the country is situated in the state of Sikkim. Other states are partly or entirely situated in this Himalaya region: Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Another important region in India’s geography is the north is the Northern Plain.

Two major rivers run in this Northern Plain: the Ganges (which also has a religious significance) and the Brahmaputra. India’s geography in the center of the country is determined by the large Deccan Plateau. This Deccan Plateau is bordered by the Western and the Eastern Ghats.

In the west of  the country, situated in the well known state of Rajasthan (“Land of Kings”), is the unique Great Thar Dessert. India’s geography is enormously varied with important differences between the 25 states. The climate, for instance, in Himachal Pradesh and in Kerala (the south) have little in common
