India  Religion

In India religion is everywhere.

Hinduism, the major India religion, is practiced by approximately 80% of the population and is the largest religion in Asia. It is one of the oldest religions in the world, along with Buddhism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. In India, religion has seeped into every facet of Indian life, especially in the arts.

Islam is the largest minority religion of India. This religion swept into India from the north and was introduced to the south by Arab traders. Buddhism and Jainism were reactions against the strictures of Brahmin Hinduism and arose in the sixth century BC. Judaism also arrived in Kerala in the sixth century BC, and Christianity arrived in India with Syrian immigrants around the fourth century.

Sikhism aims at fusing the best of of Islam and Hinduism and rejects the worship of idols, but some Sikhs do have pictures of the ten gurus in their homes as a point of focus. There are some 18 million Sikhs in India. Another India religion is Zoroastrianism, but there are only an estimated 90,000 of its followers left in India today.
