Welcome to “Gateway of India”, the website with information on India. This large nation has an area of 3,287,263 sq km. It has 25 states and seven union territories. The history of this vast country started more than 4500 years ago with the Indus River Valley civilisations of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. With the invasions of the Aryans (from 1500 BC to 200 BC) another important period started. Later came the invasions of Muslim rulers and the British. The county has many religions. Hinduism is the main religion . It is practised by 80 % of the population. Other religions that have their origin in this region are: Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.
