Khajuraho

The fascinating temples of Khajuraho.

India has a lot to offer to tourists and foreign visitors. The Taj Mahal in Agra, the holy city of Varanasi, the Mughal capital Fatehpur Sikri, the “pink city” Jaipur, the Himalaya mountains. These are just a few of the major attractions. Another popular tourist destination is Khajuraho. Khajuraho, though,  is just a small village with a population of  7600.

The famous erotic temples of Khajuraho were built in the Chandela period. The Chandelas were a dynasty for 5 centuries, until the Mughal empire was established. The temples are built in the typical Indo-Aryan architecture and are mostly known because of the erotic images in stone. Other aspects of ancient daily life are also represented.

The Western group of the Khajuraho temples include: Lakshman, Kandariya Mahadev, Lakshmi and Varaha, Devi Jagadamba, Parvati, Chausath Yogini, Vishwanath and Matangeshwar. The Eastern group includes: Parsvanath, the Jain Museum, Adinath, Shanti Nath, Javari, Ghantal, Vamana and Brahma and Hanuman. The southern group: Duladeo and Chaturbhuja. The village has tourist offices with more info.
