Kolkata is the new name for Calcutta.

 

 

 Kolkata   (Calcutta), in the Indian state of West Bengal, is considered the intellectual capital of the country. Many of the important political, cultural and religious figures of the nation came from Kolkata or the state of West Bengal. One of them, for example, is writer and poet Rabindranath Tagore.

You can visit Kolkata on your own or join an organised tour. Things to see are:  the Indian Museum, Maidan and Fort William, Shahid Minar, Eden Gardens, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, the Birla Planetarium and the Kali Temple,  St John’s Church, Marble Palace, Raj Bhavan, the National Library, the Asutosh Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Birla Academy, the Birla Museum, Bellur Math, Pareshnath Jain Temple, Dakshineshwar Temple.

Finding accommodation in Kolkata  isn’t difficult. Cheap hotels are situated in the Indian Museum area. Mid-range hotels are near BBD Bagh. Top end accommodations are also available in the city. A wide choice of good and reasonably priced restaurants can be found near Chowringhee/Sudder Street.
